India being a democracy technically means that every citizen has the freedom of expression, but lately, this freedom has come under heavy fire from intolerant people who take it upon themselves to uphold the values of the country. This attitude has rattled many people who think that violence and coercion in the name “getting their sentiments hurt will take the country on a short cut route to doom. Foremost among them are authors, hordes of whom have returned their Sahitya Akademi Awards as protest against increasing intolerance and muzzling of voices.
