Buzzing Blogosphere – Women’s Entry In Places Of Worship

The fact that organized religion is inherently patriarchal is not fresh information. Many rituals followed in all major religions are designed to keep women subservient. And since these rituals have been handed down for generations, they are not supposed to be questioned. A religious debate has been sparked over having different rules for men and women in places of worship, sparked by the Shani Shingnapur issue. This temple in Maharashtra does not allow women near the Shani idol since the time it was established. Women groups were seen protesting against this practice and this issue has snowballed into a big issue with the Maharashtra CM commenting about it and women demanding entry into Haji Ali Dargah. We bring you the conversations that happened in the blogosphere.

Buzzing Blogosphere: Rohith Vemula’s Suicide

The death of a Dalit research scholar is making headlines on every news channel for over a week. On January 17, 2016, Rohith Vemula, a student of Hyderabad University committed suicide, leaving a suicide note that says a lot more in between the lines than what he has written in his letter. He was a student activist who felt the pulse of student politics, he faced problems and he had dreams like any other student. The 26 year old’s life was lost, but not before bringing to the fore issues related to student politics, casteism and the administrative loopholes in educational institutions. The horrible irony is that while Rohith’s letter read ‘The value of a man was reduced to his immediate identity and nearest possibility. To a vote. To a number. To a thing. Never was a man treated as a mind. As a glorious thing made up of star dust. In very field, in studies, in streets, in politics, and in dying and living.’, his death has divided people even more sharply along caste lines. We look at what bloggers have to say about Rohith’s death and the later developments.

Students of journalism will remember one of the first things taught to them – Free Press is the Fourth Pillar of democracy which keeps the first three pillars on their toes. Newspapers and journalists were instrumental in the Indian freedom struggle, and we’ve had free press in our democracy, if we count some years of exception. The rise of social media has also changed the face of journalism, with Twitter being the first source of information whenever a big event happens. Let’s take a look at what the Blogosphere thinks is ailing the Indian media.

Buzzing Blogosphere: The Indian Pollution Debate

When we think of global issues, things like war, terrorism, atrocities against minorities come to mind. These are humongous problems no doubt, and we need to add pollution and global warming to this list of problems. We have data to prove that the rate at which we are polluting the Earth and using up the world’s natural resources is not sustainable in the long run, and finally world leaders are sitting up and taking notice instead of brushing the issue under the carpet.
