Major Harit Kanwal was posted in Kashmir for the past two years. With a three year old child and another on the way, his wife Kanika stayed with her in laws.

Kanika was grappling with severe morning sickness was also excited about seeing Harit in the evening, after being seven months apart. Her thoughts wandered to their earlier years.

They were neighbors in Delhi. Although, they went to different colleges, they kept in touch. She had gone to Bangalore for her higher studies and Harit was preparing for his National Defence Academy exams. One night, Kanika’s Dad met with an accident, when the auto rickshaw he was travelling in , turned turtle.

With her being so far away and with only her mother at home, she requested Harit for help. He not only took her father to the hospital but took excellent care of him. This incident came as a revelation to her. She discovered a completely new character of his and a deep seated sense of responsibility. Gradually, the odd phone call turned into surprise visits to see each other.

These beautiful memories made her smile. She carefully selected a pink coloured kurta, which she knew looked good on her. She was humming an old Mehdi Hasan song, which they both loved. She almost didn’t hear the telephone ring. Must be Harit before boarding the flight.

She picked up the receiver and listened to a husky voice at the other end. Major Kanwal’s vehicle had been ambushed late last night. No survivors. Before he could offer his condolences, Kanika replaced the receiver.

She was too shocked to even react and sat down on the floor. She must have sat there for over an hour. No, she didn’t cry. She walked very calmly to Harit’s parents’ room and conveyed the news. She let her daughter know that Daddy won’t be coming home. All of them comforted each other throughout the night.

In the morning, the doorbell rang. There were flowers at the door. A giant white wreath with the tricolour pinned to it.
